Case: Luke and Senate Properties converted grasslands in Jokioinen into meadows that support biodiversity

With Senate Properties, we established meadows over a total area of 7,070 square metres in Jokioinen. The idea started at a lunch table at Luke. The meadows were established by Senate Properties with Lassila & Tikanoja.
Some of the grasslands to be converted were allowed to become meadows naturally, while a selected seed mix of conventional meadow species purchased from a Finnish meadow seed producer was spread over other grassland areas. The mix contained both annual and perennial species and was expected to be effective. After three years, the meadow is in good condition and flowering.
The idea of converting grasslands into meadows in Jokioinen started when three Luke research scientists were talking on their way to lunch.
“Meadows save resources, reduce emissions and increase biodiversity which also excellently supports environmental sustainability, part of Luke’s sustainability goals,” says Petteri Karisto, Research Scientist at Luke.
